A series of horrific crashes caused by a man driving the wrong way down Interstate 89 in Vermont has left five people dead.

When Williston police arrived to investigate, Burgoin then stole the police cruiser and took off.

Last night, a tragic vehicle accident on Route 89 between Williston and Richmond resulted in the loss of life of four students from Harwood Union High School and one other Harwood community member who attends another school.

Williston police were first on the scene. "These students were vibrant members of our school community, actively involved and all with a promise for a bright future". As a Williston police officer pulled a female victim from the wrecked vehicle and tried to extinguish the fire, police said, the suspect - identified as Steven Bourgoin, 36 - entered the officer's cruiser and fled southbound. The man made a U-turn and once again headed north in the southbound lanes, Henry said. Henry did not say how severe the man's injuries were.

State Police said the five teens in the auto died at the scene.

The cruiser struck seven vehicles.

Bourgoin was listed critical condition at University of Vermont Medical Center on Sunday morning, according to the Burlington Free Press. Police described their injuries as non-life-threatening.

Three neighboring fire departments provided mutual aid assistance with equipment and manpower, including covering the town while firefighters were committed to the interstate, Nadeau added.

This crash is still under investigation and Vermont State Police asked anyone with information to call the barracks in Williston at 802-878-7111.

The crashes occurred after 11:45 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 89 south in Williston, Vt.
