Staff armed with tranquiliser darts roamed the zoo looking for the animal, before it was eventually recaptured.

Speaking before the gorilla's apparent recapture, the Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called by security at Regent's Park at 5.17pm to reports of an ongoing incident".

A gorilla ignited a major panic at London Zoo after breaking out of its enclosure.

A police spokesman told the Evening Standard officers have been sent "to support zoo staff dealing with the gorilla in question".

Yesterday Malcolm Fitzpatrick, curator of mammals at London Zoo, confirmed the incident occurred and said Kumbuka was back in his enclosure and "doing very well".

An alert was raised earlier with members of the public being kept inside one of the zoo's buildings for safety.

He said armed police quickly arrived and that customers were allowed to leave the zoo shortly later.

Eyewitnesses said the one that escaped appeared agitated and banged on the walls of its enclosure before it got out.
