Janis ColeNov 09, 2016

Millions of Americans have been queuing at polling stations to choose the 45th U.S. president after a long and bitter contest between Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and her Republican rival Donald Trump .

The Trump camp is anticipating victories in Arizona, Utah, Texas, Georgia and other traditionally pro-Republican states.

Clinton was expected to greet one more crowd in the early hours of Tuesday morning when her campaign plane lands in suburban NY.

As the first results rolled in, Trump claimed victory in reliably Republican Kentucky, Indiana and West Virginia, while Clinton won liberal Vermont.

After a grueling and unpredictable cycle, election day voting has begun, with voters deciding today to make either Republican Donald Trump or Democrat Hillary Clinton the country's next president. Comey's announcement on Sunday, two days before the election, that FBI investigators had not changed their July conclusion not to pursue criminal charges against Clinton should go some distance in defusing this issue, which could prove important after the votes are tallied on Tuesday.

If the Republican Presidential Candidate will be able to mount a strong following in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, then Trump can break Clinton's perceived dominance along the working class lines.

A very early state to watch that could give a clue as to what will happen is North Carolina.

In Youngstown, the center of Mahoning County, a former Democratic stronghold where Trump has this year enjoyed a surge in support among blue-collar workers, hundreds more people waited patiently in unseasonably warm sunshine to cast the final votes before election day.

She has vowed to largely continue the policies of Obama and to overcome income inequality among Americans, with a divide between the rich and poor. The GOP nominee also took aim at polls showing that Clinton has the advantage.

Millions of Americans are going to the polls to elect their 45th president at the end of an acrimonious and wildly unpredictable campaign that has divided the nation. On Monday night, Michelle Obama gave a passionate speech at a Hillary Clinton rally in Philadelphia. An influx of new residents may influence vote choices in North Carolina, as may the large share of the electorate that's nonwhite - a record 30 percent, including 23 percent blacks, in 2012, when Barack Obama lost the state by 3 points.

The race remains tight in the final hours.

Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania, a state which at one point looked in-play for Trump, Clinton has a 4 percent lead in most-recent polling.

Clinton started her day by casting her vote in Chappaqua, New York, where she and her husband, former president Bill Clinton, have lived since he left office in 2001.
