Blizzard, ice cripple Great Plains, leaving thousands without electricity (PHOTO, VIDEO)

Limiting drivers' visibility on roads and creating unsafe conditions for travel around the holidays, blowing and drifting snow was a major issue Tuesday morning in the Great Plains, according to national and local reports.

Residents in the impacted areas should expect some snow, sleet or freezing rain Monday.

Authorities have issued warnings not to travel for much of North Dakota, where vast stretches of roadways have been closed.

The National Weather Service in Bismarck, N.D., said a blizzard warning was in effect for most of the state Monday. A 400-kilometer stretch of Interstate 90 in South Dakota - a major east-west highway - was shut down, as were several other highways.

Severe whiteout conditions led to the closure of Minot International Airport, and the facility wasn't expected to reopen until 3am.

North Dakota had topped the list for the previous four years, mostly from people moving into the state for oil industry jobs. Eight states lost population, led by IL , where the number of people declined by more than 37,000 or 0.3 percent.

The storm also brought on widespread power outages in the Dakotas and Nebraska. Tuesday. The airports serving Fargo and Bismarck also listed flight cancellations on their websites.

Winds gusting up to 50 miles per hour in Minnesota also led to delays and cancellations at Minneapolis-St.

The South Dakota Rural Electric Association said more than 10,200 of its customers were without power Monday morning.

High winds were cited for hundreds of power outages in central and eastern portions of the state, according to the Associated Press.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation closed Interstate 94 through North Dakota on Monday morning.

U.S. Highway 83 between Bismarck and Minot was also closed by the North Dakota Transportation Department as of Sunday night, as U.S. Highways 2, 52 and 281 because of snow, ice and "near zero visibility".

Across the south, the unusually warm temperatures will hit highs in the mid to upper 70s.

Travel in the northern parts of the Red River Valley were expected to be unsafe if not impossible by late Sunday afternoon.
