The murder is said to have been carried out by police officer Sergio Moreira, who had an affair with Françoise, with some assistance from his cousin, who was promised a reward worth $25,000.

Formerly consul in Rio de Janeiro from 2001 to 2004, Amiridis took up his ambassadorial post in the capital Brasilia at the beginning of 2016.

Police also arrested a cousin of Gomes, who told police Gomes offered him 80,000 reals (US$24,500) to help with the murder - evidence police said pointed to a premeditated crime.

His corpse was found Thursday evening in his burned-out white rental auto parked under a highway overpass at Nova Iguacu, 41 kilometers (25 miles) north of Rio de Janeiro.

Moreira acknowledged that he and Amiridis had had a physical fight, and that he had strangled the ambassador in self-defence. The couple have a 10-year-old daughter.

Amiridis, who was named ambassador this year, had been on a family vacation with his wife in the north of Rio de Janeiro since December 21.

Rio police inspector Evaristo Pontes had earlier told Brazilian media that he did not believe the ambassador was kidnapped. Globo TV on Friday showed police carrying a sofa into police headquarters.

Oliveira had reported him missing, saying he had last been seen Monday leaving the house in the rental vehicle in which his body was later found.

Amiridis'wife originally said he left the family home on Monday without saying where he was going and had not seen him since. They are believed to often extort residents in exchange for keeping drug gangs from taking over the areas.
