He said the Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party government had destroyed the country's major institutions, including the judiciary, Reserve Bank of India and the press.

Narendra Modi gracefully ignored the invite from Jairam Ramesh and also gave the Congress leader, a subtle piece of mind. "Wherever he goes, whichever state it may be, he creates fear and the people then convert fear to anger", said Gandhi, while addressing the Congress Working Committee convention at the Talkatora Stadium here. He claimed that Modi has destroyed the autonomy of institutions of India such as RBI. The Congress will defeat these people and remove them from power.

The day-long national convention, called in the wake of demonetisation, saw top Congress leaders, including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, coming down hard on Modi.

"Demonetisation broke India's financial backbone", Gandhi, who has been at the forefront in the Opposition's protest against the government move, said. "Our friends in the media are under constraints", Rahul said as he talked about "people's reluctance to openly criticise PM Modi".

He said that the philosophy of fear being promoted by the BJP and the RSS was aimed at snatching the rights of the poor.

He also turned to media with witty smile on his face. A quick, loose translation would be, "It seems your dream is to take poor people's money". "We believe in the potential of Indians, however", Mr Gandhi said.

However, what could still worry Congress supporters and die-hard Nehru-Gandhi family loyalists is that he stopped short of declaring himself as the Prime Minister of India in 2019.

The Congress vice president also recalled a popular song from Bachchan starrer Namak Halal. In the last two months, things had only gone from bad to worse, he added. "Modiji is the first Prime Minister of India who is being ridiculed across the world", he said.
