Tommy Fleetwood beats Dustin Johnson to HSBC Championship by a shot

Rather than unnerve the Englishman, it spurred him on.

That helped him to a 5-under 67 and 17 under par overall.

England's Tommy Fleetwood played superb golf on the back nine on Sunday to win Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

Danny Willett is the current Masters champion, Matt Fitzpatrick won the World Tour Championship at the end of past year, and Justin Rose is the Olympic champion.

"It's a very big deal to prove yourself against some of the world's best".

It was the summer of 2015 and Tommy Fleetwood had climbed inside the world's top 50 for the first time in his career when he tried to change is swing.

The 26-year-old Englishman posted a five-under-par 67 in his final round to finish 17 under par - one shot ahead of U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson, who hit an eagle on the last, and 2014 Abu Dhabi victor, Pablo Larrazabal of Spain.

He rolled in a 10-footer for birdie at No. 11 to tie the lead with Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand and wasn't out of the lead through to the 18th hole.

Leading by a shot as he teed off on No. 18, Fleetwood pulled his drive into the spectators but got relief and a good lie off his drop. "It took me a few drops (from a cart path) to get the flawless spot but I just had a go at it". "You don't want to be hanging around".

His putt for eagle slid three feet by, but he made no mistake coming back and only an eagle from Pablo Larrazabal in the final group behind could deny Fleetwood. But Fleetwood came into the tournament in decent form with 10 top-20 finishes in 12 events stretching back to September. I didn't really think it would be this week. "I know it will come", said the Spaniard, who qualified for the Ryder Cup a year ago.

Jets owner Woody Johnson named US ambassador to the United Kingdom
Mr Johnson later pledged his support to the real-estate mogul when it became clear he would be the party's nominee. Trump certainly is hoping Woody Johnson fares better in his new position than the Jets have in recent years.

Fleetwood's only other tour win was at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles in August 2013.

Three-time victor Martin Kaymer also eagled the 18th to finish in a tie for fourth with Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Austria's Bernd Wiesberger on 15 under.

After 13 holes of his last round, Fox had hit three birdies and a bogey, before dropping two shots with respective bogeys on the 14th and the 16th.

"I thought maybe the second win would come sooner to be honest", he told the European tour website. Fleetwood birdied two of his final three (including the last) for the win.

"I struck the ball well and gave myself plenty of opportunities", the third-ranked Johnson said.
