Backed by the US, Iraqi forces have been fighting since October to retake Mosul, which is ISIL's last major stronghold in Iraq.

The army soldiers, backed by Iraqi and US -led coalition aircraft, took full control of al-Arabi neighborhood after heavy clashes with IS militants and raised the Iraqi flags on some of its buildings, the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC) said in a statement.

Also in the day, the soldiers recaptured al-Qowsiyat village in north of Rashidiyah after heavy clashes with IS militants and airstrikes on their positions, leaving some 40 militants killed and four vehicle bombs destroyed, the statement added.

"Iraqi Security Forces secured the Eastern bank of all five bridges across the Tigris River in Mosul during the past week of clearing operations, making it hard for ISIS fighters to flee the Iraqi Security Forces", the statement added.

"The unknown gunmen shot at Abu Abdel Rahman, ISIS' senior commander, in al-Askari region in the center of Mosul city, and he was killed right on the spot", a security source said.

Nintendo Switch Will Sell 40 Million Consoles By 2020 According To Analysts
Pre-orders for the console sold out within days, and it's hard to know when or if more will be made available by retailers. The figure is significant considering Switch's predecessor Wii U has sold 14 million units since its launch in 2014.

While the vast majority of the ISIS militants who held eastern Mosul for more than two years are now gone, even in the liberated half of the city Iraqi forces will still have to go house to house to root out any who may have melted into the community, and could still pose a threat as potential sleeper cells.

The second phase of the offensive, to free the eastern bank of Mosul, began on December 29.

Iraq's army says it has retaken all of eastern Mosul from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
