New trade deal with USA may step outside of NAFTA: ambassador

It is said that President Donald Trump "understands how critical it is to negotiate the best possible trade deals for the United States".

US President Donald Trump has said that he will soon begin "renegotiating" the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) with his Canadian and Mexican counterparts. "By renegotiating existing trade deals, and taking a tough stance on future ones, [he] will ensure that trade agreements bring good-paying jobs to our shores and support American manufacturing".

He was expected to issue an executive order to start the process as early as Monday, NBC News reported, citing an unidentified White House official. Trump wants major changes to the North American Free Trade Agreement, which has enabled Canada to send 75 percent of its exports to its southern neighbor.

This week, senior USA and Mexico officials will meet in Washington to discuss trade, security and immigration.

Schwarzman said the Trump administration is more concerned with agreements in which there are big trade imbalances, which is not the situation with Canada.

Cabinet was to meet Monday morning with Stephen Schwarzman, a businessman who chairs Trump's team of economic advisers. Trump's plan is reportedly meant to bolster USA manufacturing by spurring US companies to make their goods domestically rather than importing them.

"They haven't said anything specific about any real problems that they have with us", said David MacNaughton, Canada's ambassador to Washington and a key player on the NAFTA file. Canada is the top export destination for 35 out of 50 states, for example.
