Two suspects in custody after Quebec Mosque shooting

"I'm very horrified and quite concerned about the well-being of Canadian Muslims and the safety and security of our mosques and our women, and our children and our men", said Syed Sohardwardy a Calgary imam. Twelve others sustained minor injuries, according to a University of Quebec Hospital Centre spokeswoman.

Reports from Quebec media, including La Presse, TVA, and Radio Canada, say that Alexandre Bissonnette, 27, is the lone person suspected in the shooting.

Two suspects have been arrested in relation to the Sunday shooting at the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Centre which left 6 killed, and 8 wounded.

Quebec police say one man was arrested at the scene of the attack and the second person called 911 from his auto, saying he was armed but was willing to co-operate with police.

The iconic Toronto sign that stands in front of city hall will be dimmed on Monday night to honour the victims of the Quebec mosque attack, Mayor John Tory announced on his Twitter account.

Police have not said which of those two people is now considered the suspect, according to the AP.

One of the men was arrested at the scene of the attack, while the other was arrested in his vehicle on a bridge near d'Orleans, after he called 911 to say he wanted to cooperate with police.

The National Council of Canadian Muslims expressed outrage at Sunday's attack and called for the country to come together in the face of senseless violence and hatred.

The White House said Trump spoke to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Monday and "offered to provide any assistance as needed". Diversity is our strength, and religious tolerance is a value that we, as Canadians, hold dear. The victims were fathers, businessmen, a university professor and others who had gathered for evening prayers, said Mohamed Labidi, the vice-president of the mosque where the attack happened.

The shooting came on the weekend that Trudeau said Canada would welcome immigrants and refugees after Trump temporarily banned seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US on national security grounds.

"We condemn this terrorist attack on Muslims in a center of worship and refuge".

The mosque has already been the target of hate: a pig's head was left on the doorstep last June during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Practising Muslims do not eat pork. People who were praying lost their lives.

The Quebec police said this morning that all local mosques have increased security. "This is the nightmare scenario that Canadian Muslims have been dreading", Ihsaan Gardee, NCCM's executive director, said in a statement. "I think the extreme rhetoric that the president.has been spewing out.probably have encouraged those people to do the crime that they did", Jammal said.
