Trump Enforcement Plan Has Immigrants Bracing For Raids, Deportations

CITY-U.S. President Donald Trump dispatched his top diplomat and Homeland Security chief to Mexico on Wednesday on a fence-mending mission complicated by the actual fence he wants to build on the southern border.

"Department personnel shall faithfully execute the immigration laws of the United States against all removable aliens", the memo states, and adds.

During their brief visit, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly will face a Mexican government anxiously rethinking its relationship with its bigger, richer and more powerful neighbour.

The memos leave in place one directive from the Obama administration, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allows young people who were brought into the country illegally as children to stay and obtain work permits.

"It is irresponsible to treat a hardened criminal the same as an immigrant mother with children for purposes of deportation", said Sen.

"The Trump administration is intent on inflicting cruelty on millions of immigrant families across the country", she said in a statement.

"I want to make it clear in the most emphatic way that the government of Mexico and the people of Mexico do not have to accept provisions that one government wants to unilaterally impose on another", Videgaray said, according to Univision. He hinted that Mexico might seek to challenge Trump's move at the United Nations or in other worldwide bodies.

Children are the recipients of the majority of the Trump's administration's sympathy. Reporters were given an official briefing ahead of the trip on condition that officials weren't quoted by name.

"The last administration had so many carve-outs for who can be and who couldn't be adjudicated, that it made it very hard for the customs and enforcement people to do their job and enforce the laws of this country", White House press secretary Sean Spicer said.

Since then, Mexican officials have spoken with Tillerson and others in an effort to get the relationship back on track.

Despite the serious differences on a number of fronts the official added, "I think we'll achieve a lot of success", the senior USA administration official said.

"All of those in violation of the immigration laws may be subject to enforcement proceedings, up to and including removal from the United States".

The new priorities are broad enough to apply to nearly any illegal immigrant, including anyone who has been charged with a crime, misrepresented themselves, poses a risk to public safety, or "have abused any program related to receipt of public benefits". In other words, if they cross the southern border, the migrants will be sent back to Mexico, regardless of where they came from. The Department of Homeland Security issued the orders implementing Trump's enforcement plan Tuesday.

Trump has repeatedly insisted that Mexico, one way or another, must pay for a border wall, which lawmakers in Washington estimate would cost at least $12 billion. Mexico remained unwilling. A meeting between the two presidents hasn't been rescheduled.

The two key members of President Donald Trump's Cabinet are hoping to soothe concern and anger about the new USA administration's policies toward Mexico. Vice-President Mike Pence and Defence Secretary Jim Mattis have previously filled the role, facing foreign leaders who've struggled to reconcile their rhetoric of reassurance with the declarations of disruption from Trump and some of his senior envoys.

The order does not indicate how many people will be deported; to some extent, that depends on the ability of DHS to effectively expand its supply of field agents, both through hiring and through cooperation with local police.

Anti-Trump protests have erupted.

APew Research Center poll last August found two-thirds of the public said undocumented immigrants living in the country are no more likely than USA citizens to commit serious crimes (67 percent). The two countries plus Canada have their economies intertwined as a result of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Trump said last week he meant to "show great heart" to the dreamers. Putting the blame on Trump, Sen.
