Banksy to Open The Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem

April AlvarezMar 05, 2017

The elusive British artist has opened a hotel wedged up against the Israeli security wall that wraps around Bethlehem. One vignette in the dining room shows a pillow fight between an Israeli soldier and a masked Palestinian youth.

The nine-room hotel was open to journalists on Friday, including Krishnan Guru Murthy who gave a tour of the premises on Facebook Live.

The lounge is decorated with CCTV cameras, there's no pool, and the Presidential Suite boasts "the worst view of any hotel in the world" - but if that sounds like your dream holiday, Banksy is your man.

It contains dozens of Banksy works, a themed bar and interactive exhibits. He is noted as one of the latest figures to help popularize street art and as an authority on the latest trends in urban contemporary art.

The highlight is room number three, known... Even the overall decor-a colonial theme embodied in dark brown leather couches and deep reds-is intentional: The hotel opening comes 100 years after the Balfour Declaration, the 1917 edict from the British government that paved the way for the creation of the state of Israel.

Pro-Trump rally to be held Monday in Monmouth County
In Atlanta, the pro-Trump rally was so vast, photographers struggled to find a viewpoint to accurately depict its magnitude. Spirit of America rallies were being held in towns all across the country on Monday in support of President Trump.

The cheapest rooms were available from $30 (£25) a night.

The Banksy statement said the hotel "offers a warm welcome to people from all sides of the conflict and across the world" and was financed by the artist. It will be open for bookings on its still-undisclosed website on March 11. Last year, he is believed to have sneaked into Gaza to draw four street murals, including one on a metal door that depicted the Greek goddess Niobe cowering against the rubble of a destroyed house. "And although Banksy has chosen a site officially under Israeli military control - meaning it is legal for Israelis to stay there - all the roads to reach it involve an illegal journey through Palestinian-controlled territory".

After the 2014 Gaza war, Banksy was smuggled into the territory to create a series of artworks and a video. They have fetched up to £1.5m at auctions - but the artist has remained fiercely protective of his anonymity.
