Washington state unemployment rate holds steady in January

Van Wert County, and neighboring counties, saw unemployment increase by as much as 1.4 percentage points during the month, with Van Wert County's jobless rate increasing almost 1 percent - from 3.0 percent to 3.9 percent - during January. Farming had the third most job losses at an estimated 300 positions, followed by Manufacturing at 200 and Leisure and Hospitality, also with an estimated 200 job losses.

From January 2016 to January 2017, the state's labor force grew by 89,200, with half of that coming in the Seattle/Bellevue/Everett region.

According to the latest numbers released Wednesday by the ESD, private-sector and government employment each decreased by 3,600 jobs in January.

Countywide employment was 197,700 in January, the state report shows. Delaware County's unemployment rate was 4.1 percent, Hancock and Holmes counties had jobless rates at 4.4 percent, and Union County joined Auglaize County at 4.5 percent.

The Washington state unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in January while the Seattle-area figure was 3.7 percent, both unchanged from a month prior.

Statewide, Mercer and Auglaize counties were two of six states with unemployment rates at or below 4.5 percent.

The nationwide unemployment rate rose a tick from 4.7 percent in December to 4.8 percent in January, the second straight monthly increase, though that was still a bit better than the 4.9 percent mark a year ago.
