Scott Pruitt, EPA Chief, Doubts Carbon Dioxide's Role In Climate Change

Maxine SotoMar 10, 2017

Media outlets are feverishly reporting Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt's remarks that carbon dioxide is not the primary driver of global warming.

It also clashes with the positions of agencies like NASA and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which have concluded that global warming is driven largely by increased carbon dioxide and other manmade emissions.

To recap, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council, global warming is the idea that certain types of "greenhouse gases", chiefly carbon dioxide produced from activities like burning fossil fuels for electricity and transportation, become trapped in the Earth's atmosphere and absorb sunlight, increasing temperatures all over the planet and creating serious environmental problems. They were carrying the oil and gas industry's water to give the impression that it was not the industry, but the people of Texas and the other states who didn't want the agency to write methane standards for the oil and gas industry. The consensus message from many national and worldwide assessments of the science is pretty simple: "Natural factors can't explain the size or patterns of observed warming", he said in a statement to Climate Nexus, a communications firm that focuses on climate change and clean energy.

Like Pruitt's own entanglement with oil and gas producers, the weird anatomy of denial has a long paper trail of "bankrolled public relations firms and their bogus fronts and campaigns have deliberately sought to manipulate the media, mangle the language of real science, and effectively derail any public policy or action to halt the spiraling climate crisis".

A third town, Frechen on the outskirts of Cologne, scrapped a rally that had been scheduled for Sunday. Earlier in the day, Yıldırım said that the decision of German authorities is "very unfortunate".

"This idea that if you're pro-environment you're anti-energy is just something we've got to change", Pruitt said.

Pruitt has previously said the EPA should not regulate Carbon dioxide without a law passed by Congress authorizing it to do so.

The new head of the Environmental Protection Agency says an announcement on fuel efficiency standards will be released "very soon" as the agency works to "reduce regulatory uncertainty".

Of course, as we have seen, Pruitt's EPA is not interested in following any of the previous guidelines meant to slow the expansion of global warming. The plan's goal, per Gizmodo, "is to cut carbon emissions in the U.S. to 30 percent below 2005 levels by 2030, by targeting greenhouse gas-spewing coal and gas-fired power plants". Pruitt is moving to appoint former staffers of Senator James Inhofe, a fellow Oklahoma Republican who is known as the most influential climate change skeptic in Congress.

Yellen to Headline Final Round of Fed Speeches Before March Meeting
That contrasts with the "modestly accommodative" description she used in her January 19 speech in Stanford, California. More importantly, she dropped hints that it might end up having to increase them this year more than planned.

Scientists also have linked climate change to more frequent rain that has hit Louisiana, including the series of thunderstorms that caused devastating flooding in the Baton Rouge area in August. The Obama EPA rushed to issue its politically timed endangerment finding to prop up the flailing 2009 United Nations climate meeting in Copenhagen.

Pruitt said in his interview that Congress had not spoken on whether or not EPA had the authority to regulate carbon dioxide, making note of the 2007 Supreme Court ruling in MA vs. EPA.

Gina McCarthy, the last EPA administrator, also weighed in, saying, "The world of science is about empirical evidence, not beliefs". "It is there, and it needs to be enforced and respected", Pruitt said.

The New York Times ran with the headline: "Trump Picks Scott Pruitt, Climate Change Denialist, to Lead E.P.A".

Trump taps Bush administration lawyer and Cruz friend as Solicitor General
Noel Francisco, until this year a partner at the Jones Day law firm and a former Justice Department official under George W. Francisco has argued before the Supreme Court on several occasions, including two high-profile cases from recent sittings.

Pruitt, who had previously been the Oklahoma state attorney general, "is spewing corporate polluter talking points rather than fulfilling the EPA's mission of protecting our air, our water, and our communities", Brune added.
