Low-pathogenic bird flu found in Tennessee chicken flock, state says

The department's state veterinarian, Dr. David Wolfgang, explained that biosecurity plans should focus on cleanliness and isolating domestic birds from those in the wild.

Officials in Barron County say low-pathogenic strains are not uncommon in poultry flocks and do not cause many clinical signs of the illness in the birds.

While the company affected wasn't identified, officials said it is not Tyson Foods, which was affected earlier this week and had to euthanize 73,500 chickens in Lincoln County.

Multiple outbreaks of the virus have been reported in poultry farms and wild flocks across Europe, Africa and Asia in the past six months.

Routine screening completed on March 6 revealed the virus was present and it as then confirmed in both state and federal laboratories.

The US Department of Agriculture and state government agencies confirmed the discovery on Sunday, after a large number of the chickens had died.

Jernigan said the risk to humans from the virus found in Tennessee is low.

"The immediate response the Tennessee Department of Agriculture has taken is critical to stopping the spread of this virus into Alabama", Frazier said.
