"We have been clear that the prime minister will trigger Article 50 by the end of March", her spokesman said ahead of the vote, heavily emphasising the word "end".

At a press conference on Monday morning at the first minister's official residence, Bute House in Edinburgh, Sturgeon said the United Kingdom government had failed to compromise with her ahead of the triggering of Article 50. However, the unelected House of Lords also said that European Union residents of Britain have the right to remain and gave Parliament more say in the final talk on leaving the EU.

Ms May rejected Ms Sturgeon's accusation that she had failed to accommodate Scotland's interests in her approach to leaving the European Union, insisting that she was working closely with all the devolved administrations.

While Prime Minister Theresa May has not yet said whether or not she will approve the request, her official spokesperson has responded to Strugeon by saying the previous vote "clearly showed a majority of people in Scotland do not want a second independence referendum". Theresa May has rejected Nicola Sturgeon's proposed timetable for a referendum before the Brexit negotiations are complete.

However, May has not explicitly revealed so far whether she would block a second Scottish independence referendum.

Sturgeon said she's been trying to reach a Brexit compromise with Westminster, but has been met with a "brick wall of intransigence".

The First Minister indicated there was little chance of a compromise with the UK Government on the issue of Scotland having a special deal to stay in the European single market.

The first minister said another referendum is needed to protect Scottish interests, which are threatened by the UK's move to leave the EU.

Sturgeon said she was not turning back on further discussions should United Kingdom government change its mind.
